Stockholm Love Syndrome – What I Loved About The City

stockholm skyline feature hc lifestyle

Hi!

Get the title, geddit? Geddit? 🙂

I traveled to Sweden at the end of July 2017. It wasn't my first time there, I had visited with my parents a long time ago. But I guess it is different when you can actually remember the things you do in a city! I hope you enjoy this guide on what to do and what to see in Stockholm.

A little bit of Stockholm History

Isn't it great to find out a bit more about a city you want to travel to? (Ok, so maybe I went there and then did my history research afterward, but ssshhhhh!)

By historic accounts, the city of Stockholm was founded in the 13th century, so a long, long time ago (in a galaxy far, far away...wait, that's something else...). During a time of growth in medieval times, German influence was very strong due to trade agreements.

An important event in the history of Stockholm took place in 1471, when the Swedes fought against the Danes in the Battle of Brunkenberg. After this war, King Gustav Vasa (who got Knäckebröd named after him!) came to power and made Sweden into an independent monarchy with the capital of Stockholm.

Today, Stockholm is perhaps best-known for its cultural diversity and tourism friendliness. With its extensive green spaces and beautiful architecture, the city is open to visitors of all tastes and ages! Plus, it's very easy on the eye. No wonder Stockholm is often dubbed the "capital of Scandinavia".

To read more about Stockholm's history, visit this page.

Djurgården

The Royal Game Park in Stockholm is one of the city's main attractions. It is a huge park in the middle of the city, with vast green spaces, museums, and other attractions. Whether you want to go for a stroll, a run, or do a cultural outing, this is a must-see!

Djurgården in all its glory.

For a list of the top things to do in Djurgården, take a look at this comprehensive guide. And even if you don't visit any of the attractions in the park, walking around in it lets you discover stunning landscapes. So no need to pay for entry into anything if you're on a budget!

Skeppsholmen & Kungsholmen

The Kungsholmen district is mostly known for the City Hall, an interesting building that stands out against the skyline. A track that runs along the quay offers beautiful views of the city and has perfect spots for a relaxed brunch (just like we did!).

My favourite thing about discovering Skeppsholmen was looking at all the boats. I have a thing for old-style boats and ships (think pirates, arrrrr), so that was awesome.

Pirate Ship (not really, but I can dream)

Gamla Stan (Old Town)

Apparently, Stockholm's Old Town is one of the largest and well-preserved medieval city centres in Europe! The main attractions here are the Nobel Museum (Nobel as in Nobel Prize, sorry, had to specify;)), and the Royal Palace. Both can be reached via Stortorget square, a lovely rest spot surrounded by typically Scandinavian buildings. Definitely a great photo opportunity! In addition, I found the narrow, cobbled streets and little shops very charming! Gamla Stan was definitely my favourite area in Stockholm.

The Magnum Experience

I didn't taste any notable food in Stockholm, not from lack of wanting, but there wasn't any time for me to explore the awesome food options that I usually look for when I travel (very sad face). Nevertheless, I found one thing worth eating, and that is ICE CREAM. Yes. Everyone loves ice cream. And this isn't just any ice cream, mind you, it's Magnum. (And no, they haven't paid me to write this...I wish!)

So, what is better than normal ice cream? You got it! Customisable ice cream! You get to choose from a white, milk, or dark chocolate coat, then you can choose any 3 toppings (with the basic option). The toppings range from salted caramel to meringue, to so many other delicious treats.

Endless toppings for Magnum ice cream! Completely in love.

Södermalm

We went on a little tour of the hipster neighbourhood, as Söder (what the cool kids call it) is known. Personally, I'm a bigger fan of the other areas of Stockholm, probably because we have quite a few trendy and hipster districts in Madrid ourselves (La Latina and Chueca, I'm looking at you...)!

stockholm travel hc lifestyle
My friend doing an amazing demonstration of the hipster style;)

In summary, I enjoyed Stockholm very much! I haven't explored Scandinavia nearly enough (mostly because I'm a hot weather person), but I will definitely visit again! The people are so friendly, the architecture is lovely, and there is so much to see and do.

I hope you enjoyed reading this mini guide, and that it inspired you to travel to Stockholm someday!
