The following is an article by Troi Cluse from Muffin-Top Diary, where she speaks about her weight loss journey. I think her articles are very insightful, and I agree with her 100% on what she says here. Check it out!
I absolutely HATE it. Nothing good comes to mind when thinking of it. The hunger, aggravation, starvation, deprivation, it’s all just not how weight loss should be! Why do I have to deprive myself of foods that I enjoy, just to lose weight? Is it for that Thigh Gap? Is it to fit into those skinny jeans? Is it for looking sexy? YES, YES and YES! But there’s something missing from this list of reasons. What about health? What about a better mood? What about having no more aches and pains when waking up in the morning? The main reason why I hate Diets with a fiery-burning passion, is the mentality of a “diet” shifts our focus from Long-term Health to a Quick-Fix for Aesthetics. One of the leading industries in the American Society is the Health & Weight loss Industry, but somewhere along the lines, advertisements have focused more attention on how we look, rather than how well feel. You’ll have magazine articles with, “Get Your Bikini Body Ready for the Summer” or “Look Good in Those Skinny Jeans in just 3-Weeks!” It’s so overwhelming and discouraging! The magazine says if I follow “this” plan, I’ll lose the weight, but it doesn’t work that way. We have to change what’s within to get the outward benefits, and we can only do that by living a “Healthy Lifestyle.” Ahhh! That’s much better. Say it with me, H E A L T H Y…L I F E S T Y L E.
Healthy Lifestyle vs. Dieting
So, what’s the difference between a Healthy Lifestyle and Dieting? Well Maryann Tomovich Jacobsen, MS, RD, sums up the difference quite perfectly in her article Dieting vs. Healthy Habits – What’s the Difference? (WebMD.com). She basically explains that Diets are restrictive and limited in the food choices you can and can’t have, while with a Healthy Lifestyle, “…the person learns how to balance all foods in their diet.”
“The bottom line: Dieting is limiting, leaving people with few choices, while healthy behaviors expand choices, increasing the likelihood of success.”
This lil’ tidbit of information is so helpful when trying to lose weight. There’s no pressure to follow your eating plan to a “T,” and no harsh self-criticism for having that scoop of ice-cream! YAYY!
But wait! There’s more!!! Not only is a Healthy Lifestyle easy to maintain, but it’s better for your body. Eating Healthy Foods, making better snack choices, staying physically active to keep your body moving is all EXTREMELY important to not only lose the weight, but keep it off.
My Healthy Lifestyle & Weight loss Journey
Since I began my weight loss journey, changing my mentality was incredibly crucial to my success. I had to see this journey as a permanent lifestyle change and create the habit of making better choices, not just for my looks, but for my health. When you’re depressed, aching, out of breath, and tired all the time, it’s a miserable experience…I should know, ‘cuz I’ve been there. My story is one that I will never forget, and one that I hope will inspire and encourage others who are struggling to lose weight. It’s been 3-months and I am officially down 10 lb. of pure body fat and I have lost 3 inches off my waistline, baby! OH YEA!!! I’ve still got more to lose, but I’m getting there. This whole Healthy Lifestyle experience has been one big adventure for me. I’m always trying different things to see what works for MY BODY. And that’s how weight loss should be! It should be an exploration to try and find what works for your body and what’s best for your health. Once you find it, the rest is history! Trust me, you’ll start feeling better and your body will thank you for it.
